A covered wagon is a freight wagon closed on all sides

Covered wagons are designed to transport containerized, piece and bulk cargo and cargo requiring special transportation conditions. A covered wagon design protects the transported cargo from precipitation, theft, and mechanical damage.

A covered wagon design

A covered wagon side and end walls are made of vertical posts with top cords and metal casing from 2-3 mm profiled sheets.

Inside, the walls are sheathed with moisture-resistant plywood 8-10 mm thick; the ceiling is made of wood fiber boards with a polyurethane-based sprayed polymer coating. The floor is made of boards 65 mm thick. The wagon frame has a center beam made of special profiles and additional beams for securing the floor.

The wagon has hatches and sliding doors with locks with the possibility of sealing and closing with a lock or a lock-and-seal device. The chassis, draw-and-buffer gears, and brakes are similar for all types of covered wagons. A wagon end can have a fenced platform for safe passage between wagons.

The maximum design speed of all universal covered wagons is 120 km/h.
